The Ugly American

Wednesday is now Power Yoga night . We worked late, so there was not really time for a snack, so I was ready for a good feed afterwards.

We decided to give Shogun Japanese Restaurant a try tonite, it's in the same strip mall as Tonys'. There are always lots of good smells coming out of there after a workout - especially the fried kind, so it was agreeable to Clark, Fred and Ashley.

We got seated by the one American waitress in a kimono, who was actually new there too, so she had to bring someone out to answer Clark's questions about the grilled steak. WHY they call it grilled steak when they tell you its cooked in a watery sauce...... Anyway. He didn't get that.

We ordered a tempura California roll, a tempura shrimp roll and a spicy tuna roll. The shrimp was the best! We fingered it, as the waitress brought no chopsticks. No problem with the Ugly Americans.

I ordered one of their weekday specials for dinner, some tofu udon noodle soup with fish cakes. Came with salad too. Can't go wrong with a basic iceburg salad. The soup was another story. It came out with grass clippings on top, and the fish cakes floating in the soup..... HMMMM... On the plus side, there was a basket of health food, deep fried tempura tofu... Good for ya stuff.

Ashley had gotten some good chicken and shrimp I was envious of, with noodles and veggies AND rice. Wow! She did her best with the veggies, but I wound up eating most of them.

After we got our grub on, the waitress came back and asked if we wanted the ice cream that came with our meals... WHAT, ICE CREAM?? Who wouldn't get the ice cream that comes with a meal? Of course one of the choices was orange sherbert, but technically, it is a frozen dessert, right?

All in all a good meal for the ugly Amercians.l I now know to stay away from the worm soup with fish cakes and grass clippings and don't order the small glass of wine, go for the big can of Japanese beer that is made in Canada. You'll be glad you did!
